History of Tea:
Tea has a long and interesting history, and remains the most consumed
drink in the world after water. The Stash Tea website details the
history of
tea.
Today in America, "afternoon tea" has a reputation
for being fancy, very feminine and perhaps even a little stuffy - probably
because of it's long association with ladies of the British aristocracy. The
truth is that "tea" in Britain today is very unstuffy, and is enjoyed by
everyone. It is simply taking time out of your busy day to enjoy some
tea - and usually it's from a mug not a fancy teapot and teacup - and
some wholesome food.
It is also interesting to note that "tea" in
England generally refers to tea with milk. Herbal teas, all the rage in the US, are not
very popular in Britain unless taken medicinally. Green teas are also
quite hard to come by in British tea rooms. Celestial Seasonings is
arguably the US market leader in herbal teas, and they have compiled a great
reference site on the
health benefits of green tea.
Tea the world over, if you'll pardon the pun, is steeped in tradition.
The Chinese Ceremony is among the most
ritualized, but keep in mind they have had over 4,000 years to make up
rules.
The Japanese have their own version of the
Tea Ceremony.
It includes sake and a meal.
There is one type of tea that is often overlooked -
The
Russian Tea Ceremony. It is certainly a very
interesting service which deserves recognition.
